The Story Behind Summerwinds
The Story Behind Summerwinds
About The Hounds of Summerwinds
For more than five decades, Summerwinds has been dedicated to preserving, breeding, and exhibiting Afghan Hounds that exemplify the beauty, elegance, soundness, and noble character of this remarkable breed.
The Summerinds journey began in 1968, when Rosemary Sutton purchased her first Afghan Hound. What began as a fascination with one extraordinary breed grew into one of the most successful and respected Afghan Hound breeding programs in history.
Over the years, the Summerwinds breeding program has produced more than 300 AKC Champion Afghan Hounds, a record that has stood for decades. Rosemary was recognized as the Top Afghan Hound Breeder in the United States in both 2002 and 2006, and Summerwinds dogs have earned many of the sport's highest honors.
Among the kennel's greatest achievements was the homebred BIS SBIS CH Summerwinds Me N Myself N Pamir ("Ike"), who became the Number One Afghan Hound in the United States in 2008.
More recently, the breeding program co-produced the dam of MBIS MRBIS MSBIS GCHP Sunlit's King of Queens, who achieved the distinction of being America's Number One All-Breed Dog during multiple years between 2022 and 2024, concluding his remarkable career by winning the Hound Group at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in 2024.
While championships and rankings are gratifying, they have never been the primary goal. Every breeding decision has been guided by a commitment to preserving correct breed type, sound structure, effortless movement, exceptional temperament, and the timeless elegance that defines the Afghan Hound.
Our greatest satisfaction comes from knowing that Summerwinds dogs have brought beauty, companionship, and success to families and exhibitors throughout the United States and around the world. Each generation is carefully planned with the goal of preserving the qualities that have made the Afghan Hound one of the world's most elegant and distinctive breeds.
A Legacy Beyond Breeding
The experience gained through decades of breeding, conditioning, and exhibiting Afghan Hounds became the foundation of the SummerWinds® product line.
Drawing upon her professional background as a licensed cosmetologist and advanced training under the internationally renowned Vidal Sassoon and owning her own salon, Rosemary recognized that the grooming products available for animals often failed to meet the unique needs of canine coats and skin. Combining her expertise in professional hair care with decades of hands-on experience, she began developing premium grooming products specifically formulated for dogs.
Together, Rosemary and her late husband, Bruce Sutton, expanded that philosophy beyond grooming by studying animal nutrition and developing Health-E-Coat®, a nutritional supplement based on one simple belief:
Healthy animals produce beautiful coats.
Today, SummerWinds® manufactures professional-quality grooming products and nutritional supplements trusted by breeders, professional handlers, groomers, and devoted pet owners around the world. Every formula reflects decades of experience in the show ring and a commitment to producing products that deliver exceptional results.
Although our passion began with Afghan Hounds, the SummerWinds® product line has earned the confidence of owners and exhibitors of virtually every breed, as well as cats and horses, throughout the world.
